A Stepping Stone Like Any Other

I thought this ring would change me,
Change us,
Usher in some cataclysmic transformation,
Rearrange atoms and alter states,
But it’s just a stepping stone like any other,
Only grander, more sparkly,
The next logical step
On this journey of ours,
The beginning of a new phase,
But not a change in course,
For that was set long ago,
Now we have plans to lay,
Decisions to make,
Politics to navigate,
But we ourselves remain unchanged,
Our dynamic unaltered,
Because it was already there.
