It shouldn’t have been him,
we both know that,
not the first time,
or any of the times thereafter,
nor would it have been
had crosses and altars not stood in the way,
our way,
cold, forbidding and impassable,
nothing to be done,
quite literally,
and so I went searching elsewhere,
turning away from the luminescent beauty
of that intricate stained glass,
settling instead before the plainest of windows
with no view to remark on,
