Sand Dunes

I thought some things would always matter,
That some events would always loom
Out of the horizon of my life,
Great immovable rock formations
Whose shadows I could never escape,
That no matter how much distance I put
Between myself and them,
They would never fully disappear,
Only shrink and become hazier.

Now the axis of my world has shifted,
And I see that those rock formations
Were merely sand dunes,
Temporary and insubstantial,
Capable of being worn away by
Wind and time and tide,
The grains scattered far and wide
Until nothing remains
But a flat and dazzling horizon.
